Ohio State's Win Over Purdue Was The Biggest Since ...

Just how big was Ohio State’s 64-63 road win over No. 3 Purdue last night? You have to go back a bit to find a regular season win that means as much.

How Big Was Ohio State’s Win Over No. 3 Purdue?

This type of win wasn’t supposed to happen in 2018 — not before a couple of grind it out type of years. But look who has arrived at the terminal early, ready to take the window seat and fly towards a Big Ten Championship.

It’s the guy holding the briefcase, wearing Scarlet and Gray.

So just how big was the win at Purdue? Well, taking first place this late in the season on the road against the No. 3 team in America has to rank up there.

How far must we go back to find a regular season win as big? Have you really even thought about it?

No, the Michigan State win at home this year isn’t it. That was an announcement over the conference loud speaker that this Buckeye team might have something, but it was a start. Beating Purdue in a hostile environment was validation.

Nothing over the last two years counts. You can’t have a program-stamping win in a season where you don’t make the NCAA tournament. This team is a lock to make the tourney at this point.

So what is it? I think you have to go all the way back to the 2011-12 Big Ten season when the Buckeyes traveled to No. 5 Michigan State on March 4th. Ohio State upset the Spartans 72-70, effectively securing a shared regular season crown with MSU and Michigan.

That year Ohio State went on to lose to the Spartans by four in the Big Ten Championship Game, and made a run to the Final Four where it lost to Kansas by two points — one game short of the NCAA title game.

Not to say this team will go that far, but at this point you have to at least be sipping on the Kool-Aid.
