Taver Johnson Officially Announced As New Cornerbacks Coach At Ohio State

Defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs left for the NFL and left an open assistant coach vacancy on Urban Meyer’s staff. Today, that opening has been officially been filled with the hiring of former Buckeye assistant Taver Johnson.

Taver Johnson To Take Over As Buckeyes’ Cornerbacks Coach.

It’s good to come home. That’s what Temple co-defensive coordinator Taver Johnson must be thinking, now that Ohio State has officially announced his hiring as the new cornerbacks coach.

Coaching staffs are allowed ten assistants, and Johnson rounds that out along with the hiring of Alex Grinch just a few weeks earlier

Here is the complete quote from Urban Meyer on the hiring:

“I am really pleased to have Taver Johnson join our coaching staff,” Meyer said. “I’ve known Taver for a long time, going back to our days at Notre Dame, and I think he is a terrific coach and person. He’ll do an excellent job coaching our cornerbacks and mentoring the young men in our program.”

Johnson was formerly with Ohio State under Jim Tressel from 2007 to 2011 as a defensive backs coach, but moved on after that staff was broken up when Urban Meyer was hired in 2012.

From there, he had stops at Arkansas and Purdue before his stint at Temple where he was just recently named assistant head coach/co-defensive coordinator.

It’s the second Ohio native hired as an assistant just over the past month at OSU. Prior to that, Ohio State announced the hiring of Alex Grinch from Washington State as co-defensive coordinator.

The release from OSU does state that additional responsibilities could be announced in the future.
