Ohio State vs. Penn State: 3 Things We Learned

Ohio State Isn’t Immune To A Clunker

If you’ve been watching this team in 2018, you probably thought this type of performance was underneath them. Not so. Even the Carolinas and Dukes of the world just have an off night.

That doesn’t excuse the lack of focus and effort out of the gate, but this one just didn’t go Ohio State’s way. Penn State was hitting crazy shots, OSU was missing open shots, and it all got away early on.

It was nearly impossible to climb out of the hole.

Now, the challenge will be to put this in the rear-view and go forward knowing that there are still a lot of things to play for, and a lot of good still on the runway because of how Ohio State has played to date.

It’s not the end of the world here.

There Still Wasn’t Any Quit

It would have been easy to mail this one in with this year’s tax return, and for awhile it looked like that might happen. But to Ohio State’s credit, it did puff out its chest and show some fight in the second half.

So much so, that you almost got the feeling that a comeback was in hand. In about a five minute period, the Buckeyes cut a 30-point lead to just sixteen with about 10 minutes to play.

It didn’t happen in the end, but last year’s team would have folded up the tent, put out the fire, and left camp with s’mores still cooking.

Athletic Teams Will Give OSU Fits

Consider this a warning shot. I know Michigan State has some athletes, but I’m not kidding when I say this Penn State team has more athletic talent in its starting five than any other team in the conference — and that includes the Spartans and Boilermakers.

This Ohio State team plays really well together, seems to always be in the right spot on the floor, and trusts one another. However, the athletic ability does still need an upgrade if the program is going to have long term staying power at the elite level.

I think tonight showed everyone that a matchup against a more superior athletic team could pose some serious issues once tournament time rolls around.
