Urban Meyer Gives Insight On The Quarterback Battle At Ohio State

Well looky here! Spring practice has finally thawed the hearts of Buckeye fans awaiting more football, and there’s finally some real-time news to report.

As is customary, Urban Meyer spoke to the media today after the first spring session — and ultimately — the topic of quarterbacks came up. The question was posed on what the pecking order was right now. Meyer had this to say:

“I think it’s what you expect, it’s what I expected, I think we all know Dwayne kinda finished the season, and finished it strong against the team up north. Joe, before his injury was neck and neck. We’re trying to do the best we can to make sure they have equal opportunity to compete, and I’m going to throw Tate Martell’s name in there as well too. He’s earned the right to compete as well. So, we’re going to do the best job we can  … it’s everyone’s dream to be the quarterback at Ohio State. Just want to make sure we’re doing it right.  Day to day with those guys.”

Other notes from Meyer during the first spring practice press conference:

  • Urban feels that he probably owes Joe Burrow an idea of an answer of whether he’ll play or not. Burrow is due to graduate and could transfer for playing time.
  • Incoming freshman QB Matthew Baldwin is on the shelf right now recovering from an ACL injury. They are being very cautious with him right now.
  • OSU is over the scholarship limit, and need to get under by a couple more players. It’s still to be determined how the Buckeyes will get to that number.
  • For QBs, Meyer likes competitiveness, toughness, leadership, and intelligence in that order. Then you go to being able to make plays out of nothing. That competition and scoring has been ongoing since the winter.
  • Meyer was asked about the potential change with kick-offs and the ability to fair catch in the field of play for a touch-back. He said he hasn’t given it much thought, but it would take a weapon away from what they’ve tried to do in the past.
  • There is more concern about the center position as opposed to quarterback. He thinks things will be fine at quarterback, but he doesn’t know who’s going to be center yet. There are options, but someone needs to step up.
  • The belief is there that some of the 2017 class will be difference makers this year, much like the 2014 year had a lot of second year players.
  • Demario McCall has been challenged and had a very good day. Meyer wants him to be a returner on both kick-offs and punt return. He could get more reps at H-back depending on how he performs in practice.
  • There were media reports that linebacker Dante Booker was set to transfer. Meyer met with Dante and his mom and says that he plans to be a Buckeye and is dealing with getting over some injuries. Hopefully he’ll be a starting linebacker for Ohio State.
  • There are some elite players ready to step up on the defensive-line. Chase Young, Bosa, etc. should be very good.
  • Meyer is looking for more from the receivers. The group has been really good, but the expectations will be higher this year. There’s a lot of potential that needs to become a reality.
  • Jordan Fuller looks great in the secondary, but there is concern with that position group.
  • Isaiah Prince will get the first shot at left tackle because he’s earned it (moving over from right tackle). Thayer Munford will get the first opportunity to prove himself at right tackle. He’s impressed and earned a lot of internal awards with the team.
