Ohio State Spring Football Preview: H-Back

Spring practice has started in Columbus, and we are continuing our preview look at each position group at Ohio State. It’s time to look at what is often the most explosive player in an Uran Meyer offense — the H-Back.

Ohio State Spring Football Preview: Wide Receiver

We’ve gone through nearly all the offense so far in our spring preview, but there’s one position group remaining — wide receiver. We’re going to break this one up into two different previews because there’s so much in returning talent, and the fact that the H-Back is such a coveted slot in Urban Meyer’s offense.

The position got notoriety because of Percy Harvin at Florida, but since then we’ve seen guys like Braxton Miller, Curtis Samuel and Parris Campbell man the cannon.

Key Losses

None really. All the wide-receivers in the two-deep return for 2018, and that means all the H-Backs do too. Some decided to pass up the chance at declaring for the NFL to come back for one more ride, and it should be a lot of fun.

Of course OSU is breaking in a new QB, but what better way to do so than with the H-Backs back with ZONE 6 in full force.

Returning Talent

Parris campbell

Campbell was the brightest bulb in a closet full of ’em last year. Despite missing some time due to a concussion, he still led the team yards and showed more big-play potential than anyone else on the team. He might be the fastest Buckeye, and when he gets the ball in space, he usually makes guys miss and shifts into another gear. He’ll be leaned on heavily again this year, and if there’s further development — look out world.

K.J. Hill

Campbell may have the most yards from scrimmage, but Hill had more catches and was less than forty yards shy of the yardage Campbell gobbled up. Hill isn’t exactly lacking in the speed department, but he had a knack for getting the tough crossing yards to keep the chains moving. He could be that security blanket for the whomever wins the starting QB gig, but don’t discount his big-play ability either.

Demario Mccall

There has been a buzz from the coaches and players on the ability of McCall to steal some opportunities away from the other two at H-Back. The running back room is crowded and talented, but McCall has a skill set that can’t just sit on the shelf. He’s quick and stocky and could present a matchup nightmare with jet sweeps, screens and other creative packages in addition to returning kicks.

The Incoming Class

Master teague

Teague was recruited as a running back, but he has the attributes that could land him as a star in the H-Back slot. Some of the numbers he put up in various camps and workouts prior to getting injured were eye-popping. He’s extremely fast and athletic and might be the next great one waiting in the wings to carry on the tradition of the vaunted slot receiver in the Urban Meyer offense.

He might be a bit behind the others because of recovering from an injury sustained during his senior season, but he’ll be ready to go soon enough. He was a bit under the radar nationally, but not at Ohio State. They think they got a good one here.

Brian SNead

Snead was also recruited as a running back, but so were some of the other slot receivers for Urban Meyer. He likes his H-Back guys to be one of the fastest on the team and have the ability to get out in one on one matchups and break the game open. Snead fits that mold, and with the embarrassment of riches at the running back position, he might be moved over depending on what happens to the others in the room. He has crazy fast acceleration and that’ll play anywhere.

Predicting The Pecking Order

    1. Parris Campbell
    2. K.J. Hill
    3. Demario McCall
    4. Brandon Snead*
    5. Master Teague*

* Freshman
