“You’re playing really good teams from here on out,” said Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann after his team’s NCAA Tournament fate was announced.

Few opponents, however, are as good offensively as the team the Buckeyes ended up drawing.

South Dakota State is sixth nationally in points per game (89.4). Their three-point field goal percentage (40.3) is the country’s 12th best.

The Summit League squad is led by forward Mike Daum. The 6’9″, 250-pound junior averages 23.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest.

“We’re an easy upset pick, I’m sure,” Holtmann acknowledged.

Partly, that’s because Ohio State is a five seed, the Jackrabbits a 12, and that is a match-up famous for upsets.

However, Holtmann also pointed out several reasons the Buckeyes have to be confident.

He noted his team is hungry and argued they have been prepared by games against tough competition.

“I read somewhere today where we haven’t had a quality win in a month,” he said. “I literally chuckled, because the person who said that clearly has not coached or played in the Big Ten, certainly not at Indiana on senior night.”

Holtmann may also have already been aware that, for all their firepower, South Dakota State has struggled defensively, giving up 74.1 points per game. That ranks them 221st nationally in that category.

The Buckeyes (24-8) play the Jackrabbits (28-6) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. The game is being played at Taco Bowl Arena in Boise, Idaho.
