Former Ohio State Head Coach Earle Bruce Passes

Former Ohio State football head coach Earle Bruce has passed away this morning per a release put out by his daughters through the university.

Bruce coached the Buckeyes from 1979 through 1987 after Woody Hayes was famously let go from the post and nearly took OSU to the national title in his first year.

Bruce bled Scarlet and Gray and was known for his passion on and off the field in everything he did, did radio in Columbus as well, and often stirred up the players with his fiery speeches before the Michigan Game.

Aside from Ohio State, Bruce also was the head coach at the University of Tampa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Colorado State. He compiled an overall record of 154-90-2.

Here is the complete release from Bruce’s daughters:

Statement from the Daughters of Coach Earle Bruce

April 20, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Coach Earle Bruce, early this morning, Friday, April 20. He was a great man, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and a respected coach to many. Our family will miss him dearly, but we take solace in the belief that he is in a better place and reunited with his beloved wife, Jean. We thank you for your prayers and good wishes.

His loving daughters: Lynn, Michele, Aimee and Noel
