Remembering Earle Bruce: Five Treasured Memories At Ohio State

It’s a sad day with the news of former Ohio State football coach Earle Bruce passing early this morning after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Here at Buckeye Wire, we decided to pay tribute to the OSU legend by looking at five moments that we’ll always remember from his time on the sidelines in Columbus.

 The 1979 Season

Bruce infamously took over for Woody Hayes when things went haywire after the Charlie Bauman incident against Clemson, and he nearly pulled off a miracle season.

Ohio State had plenty of talent coming back, but nobody expected it to do what Bruce engineered in his first season wearing the headset in Columbus. All Earle did was take a team, mold it, and get it to run off victory after victory during the regular season — including a come from behind 18-15 victory over Michigan — to finish the regular season unbeaten.

The Buckeyes would land in the Rose Bowl, where they narrowly lost to USC due to a missed FG attempt late in the game, falling 17-16 and just missing out on a national championship.

Still a pretty remarkable season no matter how you slice it.
