Urban Meyer Confirms Dwayne Haskins Will Get First Look Under Center

We finally have some comments from Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer following the transfer announcement by former QB Joe Burrow, and it falls in line with what we all thought.

As first reported by Joe Scalzo of the Canton Repository, while speaking in Canton at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon on Monday, Meyer was asked about the quarterback situation as well as a slew of other topics and had this to say about the starting spot.

This is really the first time I’ve talked about this since the spring game, but as of now it looks like Dwayne Haskins will get the first opportunity to be the starter,” he said. “Dwayne is a young guy that came in against our rivals and did a heck of a job. You go back and watch that again, he came in on the first drive and took us down the field and scored on that first drive against that defense. So he’s got a great release, he’s got good size and he’s a mobile-enough quarterback … It’ll change how we attack defenses.

Now this comes as little surprise to any of us if you’ve been following the situation. After all, Haskins has shown his abilities, has more game experience than Tate Martell and had seemed to be deferred to as the guy during the annual Spring Game.

So, yeah, there you have it straight from the Buckeye sheriff himself.

Still, you can expect to see Martell in some packages drawn up specifically for his skill set in special circumstances, and there’s the obvious caveat of this whole thing needing to go down through the summer and fall before anyone is officially named the starter.

For now — at least — we can say that we’ve finally heard something coming from Ohio State on losing Joe Burrow to the graduate transfer graveyard, and where things stand with who’ll be calling the shots.
