Ohio State Softball Beats USF In Game One Of Gainesville Regional

The Buckeye softball team found itself in the midst of a pitcher’s dual on Friday night, both teams failing to get many runners on base, and when they did, not able to capitalize.

Until the bottom of the sixth inning that is.

With a scoreless tie, and a combination of just four hits between both USF and Ohio State, the Buckeyes got some two-out lightning to finally push some runners across the plate.

OSU managed to battle and get the bases loaded courtesy of an intentional pass and then a another walk where catcher Becca Gavin battled, fouling off a couple of two-strike fastballs to force ball four that set up some heroics.

After the walk, Ohio State head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly lifted outfielder Taylor White for pinch hitter Taylor Stevens to queue up the dramatics.

With the count 1-1, Stevens delivered a line drive to the gap that hit the wall and cleared the bases to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead.

From there, USF threatened by also pushing a run home, and with a runner on, the tying run came to the plate with two outs, but was unable to do anything further.

Besides Stevens, the star of the game was pitcher Shelby McCombs who allowed just two hits, and used a dominating drop ball and changeup to keep the Bulls’ hitter off balance all day.

With the win, Ohio State now plays the No. 2 overall seed Florida Gators at 2:30 PM today. It’ll be an uphill climb to find a way to stay with a deep and talented national power like the Gators at home, but the Buckeyes will at least get the chance.
