Urban Meyer Motivates By Remembering Former Ohio State DE John Simon

If there’s one thing Urban Meyer has shown over his career, it’s the ability to motivate players. In 2018, he’s trying to show this team what it’s like to be a fierce competitor and leader by producing a video of former Ohio State defensive end John Simon.

Urban Meyer Motivates By Remembering Former Ohio State DE John Simon

Those outside the Buckeye football program won’t necessarily remember the name John Simon. But if you ask any of the players, coaches, or opposite teams that played against the former defensive end, they’ll be keenly aware.

And how.

More specifically, if you ask Urban Meyer, he’ll get a fierce look in his eyes, a grin from ear-to-ear, and he’ll switch on something inside of him that only certain players can evoke. That’s because he’s called Simon one of the fiercest competitors he’s ever been around, and he wants the 2018 Buckeyes to know it.

In case you missed it, Meyer took to Twitter a couple of days ago to reflect upon the person, competitor and teammate John Simon was.

He was the glue that cemented Meyer’s first Ohio State team together in 2012, and was one of the key cogs in a wheel that set the tone for where the program stands now.

The maiden voyage that team went on had no business culminating in anything close to undefeated. The talent wasn’t deep enough and there was nowhere to go at the end of the rope when the regular season was done. That’s because the NCAA slapped a post-season ban on the Buckeyes because of the Tressel tattoo scandal.

Yet when the book was closed on that year, the fairy tale was finished at 12-0. Unblemished, yet nowhere to go but forward with the groundwork laid out for teams that would follow.

So forgive Meyer for getting sentimental when talking about John Simon. The kid was tough as nails, played injured more often than not, yet continued to wind the motor and give his teammates and coaches all he had — until he literally couldn’t give anymore heading into the final game of his career against That School Up North.

I’d hate to be a plaster wall when he realized it wasn’t going to happen on that bitter, snow-flurry filled day. Of course the team won the game for him that day because the story couldn’t possibly end any other way.

But why has Meyer decided to get a video of this ultimate Scarlet and Gray warrior produced now? Six years after he last played a game on the Banks of the Olentangy?

Well, it’s not hard to read between the lines here is it? This team is talented enough to go to some amazing places. But it won’t do it without leadership, courage, and the toughness displayed by guys like Simon.

Urban Meyer wants his team to see what it takes to leave everything out on the field, because that’s what it’s going to take for Ohio State to end the season atop the mountaintop it strives to be.

No go out and win a championship by following his example. After all that’s what Simon says.
