Years ago, Urban Meyer quipped that Notre Dame would be his dream job. With Brian Kelly a mediocre season away from being on the hot seat once again, would Urban consider spurning the Buckeyes for the Golden Domers if the right situation presented itself?
Looking Ahead: What If Notre Dame Really Wants Urban Meyer?
As a new college football season approaches, a new crop of head coaches are feeling a little heat in the seat of their pants. Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly has been feeling it for a while now with the expectations that come with being the Fighting Irish lead man and the lack of meeting them on a consistent basis.
What else is new in South Bend?
His tenure as been a roller coaster ride to say the least. The Pre-season hype train always seems to have Notre Dame ranked anywhere from No. 7 to No. 16. With Irish eyes always smiling — always set on a higher prize — a less than stellar performance could cost Kelly his job.
In fact, based on past history of coaches, it’s quite surprising he’s still there — doing just enough in some pivotal years to keep wearing the headset.
So what if Notre Dame underperforms this year and Kelly is let go? Odds say Urban Meyer would at least get a phone call of interest. In an article written at the end of the 2017 season, a poll showed Urban to be the overwhelming choice, meaning fans that worship Touchdown Jesus are downright giddy about the idea.
But would Urban really leave the Scarlet and Gray? I don’t see it happening, but we Buckeye fans might be holding our breath, at least for a moment based on Meyer’s history with Notre Dame, and it being self-labeled as his dream job prior to backing the UHaul up to Columbus.
Some people say the money Notre Dame would offer would be too much to turn down. Estimates have been seen as high as ten million plus for a coach of Meyer’s pedigree. Urban is already making six million plus at Ohio State.
Yes, another 4 million per year would be nice in anyone’s bank account, but with the extra salary comes an even higher expectation. We’ve already seen the health scare that comes from too much stress and Meyer will want no part of that.
Nor would his family most likely.
Isn’t Urban Meyer a devout Catholic? Yes he is. Not enough of a reason to make him leave a program where he is already a legend, and on the path towards statue status.
Ohio State is in the midst of a golden era. Notre Dame on the other hand, is fighting to stay relevant in an ever changing college football landscape. A landscape that has bulldozed over the previous mystique of the Fighting Irish. Could there be some intrigue to revive a program that hasn’t seen a national championship in 30 years? Sure.
But Urban Meyer is 53 years old and at this stage of his career, he’s not looking to rebuild, just reload. Ohio State gives him the best chance to do that. And besides… Urban has already turned the Irish down once before.
Should Brian Kelly be let go, Meyer will no doubt have his tires kicked and air pressure checked for interest. But rest easy Buckeye Nation, our head coach won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
