The College Football Playoff has been a great addition to college football, but why did we stop there? Why didn’t this thing start with eight teams, and why can’t it go there now?

The Case For An Eight Team College Football Playoff: Debunking Five Myths

We are all suckers aren’t we? Stay with me here.

After years of watching some crazy formulas and tie-ins determine who plays for a national championship in college football, the outcry from vocal fans, players, and just enough of those in power finally got us all what we wanted. A playoff.

Or did it?

Yeah, the four-team seeded bracket that was rolled out to loud cheers and applause at the start of the 2014 season has the word playoff in the name.  The very unoriginal term College Football Playoff — or CFP for short — is now coming to a television set, mobile device, or tablet near you every winter.

But is it really a playoff?

We were all fooled by this thing being called as such, when it’s really an “and-one” idea that was peddled by many during the BCS era. The fat cats and money-brokers in power kept the bowl-system alive and just added an extra game at the end of it.

Welcome to your four team College Football Playoff America. Enjoy while the snickers and sneers of the wool being pulled over the faces of everyone settles in.

Okay, so yeah, it’s better than it was with the crazy BCS brouhaha and Bowl Coalition that came before it, and it’s light years better than the mythical junk we had with all the bowl tie-ins that existed prior when the top teams seemed to never play each other on the field. But still, this whole thing still stopped short of a real, live playoff.

Since then, we’ve had more controversy, more teams left out that had a legitimate gripe of being in the top four, and more of an outcry to expand the playoff to eight teams.

But yet all we keep hearing are a slew of familiar reasons why it can’t happen. After all, there was the same push back and gnashing of teeth when folks cried for the BCS to ride off into the sunset.

Yet here we are with a four-team “playoff.” It happened, and it has so far been a media success. There’s no doubt about it.

So let’s stop the stonewalling and pandering shall we? Let’s get this thing done sooner rather than later. We’ll do our part by dispelling five myths that are out there towards expanding to eight teams.
