What Would It Mean For Ohio State To Land Five-Star PG D.J. Carton?

The lifeblood of any program in college athletics is recruiting. We saw it with Thad Matta when he came in and began going after — and getting — some of the bigger names in the country to turn Ohio State into a perennial power, and we saw it again when those efforts slipped a little to send the program into a spiral.

If Ohio State is to continue its meteoric rise back to relevancy, Chris Holtmann will need to haul in bigger fish than the tail-end of his predecessor’s tenure. He gave a great effort in year one with little time to put much together, did even better for 2018, but now the focus is on the future with what his staff is going after in 2019.

Holtmann and company have already landed the best player in Ohio with the announcement of Alonzo Gaffney, but there’s another big fish out there the coaching staff has been putting the full-court press on for 2019.

In case you missed it, there’s a point-guard from Iowa that’s playing lights out and has gotten all kinds of attention. He’s the No. 2 rated point-guard in the class and has had several big-time programs trying to sway him to their school. His name is D.J. Carton out of Bettendorf, Iowa.

Carton is 6-2, 195 lbs. and has a great ball-handling, creativity on the court, and the ability to get into the lane and finish among the trees. He’s a true point guard in today’s standards with the ability to score when called upon.

And he has Ohio State in his final three.

Frankly, that comes as superb news at this point because Ohio State continues to make the cut despite not being listed as the top potential landing spot for his services all the way through. Teams like Marquette, Iowa and Michigan have often been tabbed in predictions, but only one of those remain.

In fact, it’s now down to three Big Ten schools — Michigan, Indiana and yes, Ohio State.

What that means is that the Buckeyes have a realistic shot here. It’s clear that Holtmann has somewhat secretly formed a bond with the kid and that he’s serious about what the program has to offer and the direction in which things are going under their new coach.

If you believe the hype and prognostications out there right now, many believe he is a heavy Michigan lean, but with the way things have gone, who knows — and in fact, I’d give the Buckeyes a legitimate shot at this point. It wasn’t surprising that he listed OSU in his final three, and the buzz is that the Buckeyes are gaining momentum.

He will, in fact, be on campus this week, so there’s another chance to make an impression and seal the deal.

So what does it mean if Holtmann can land this big fish, and make it two of the top thirty recruits in the country according to 247Sports? Aside from the obvious that it’d be two great players coming into the picture, it would also mean that Ohio State would be an immediate player nationally in recruiting again, and be right back among the Big Ten and country’s elite teams.

OSU is already going to have a young nucleus that will be around and seasoned by then. You take guys like Micha Potter, Musa Jallow, transfer C.J. Walker, Kaleb Wesson and others (barring early departures), and add in the likes of Luther Muhammad and others in the 2018 class, and both Gaffney and Carton and whomever else signs and — look out.

Truth is, the team will still have a shot at being really good once 2019 rolls around anyways with what’s in the cupboard, but adding a difference maker like Carton at the point guard spot would potentially make the Buckeyes a great team.

There’s not a date set for a final announcement yet, but we’ll all be watching to see how this all plays out. Either way, we’re going to get an opportunity to watch Carton in the Big Ten, let’s just hope its on the banks of the Olentangy and not in Maize and Blue or Cream and Crimson.
