It didn’t quite go according to script, but the team that former Ohio State and Michigan guard Andrew Dakich had a big hand in putting together was able to outlast the No. 13 seeded Chattanooga Trenches 81-79 on Saturday.

Big X fell down by sixteen points earlier in the second half, but went on a furious rally behind Gahanna native Jamel Morris’ 32 points to take the lead late in the game and set up the thrilling finish in an Elam Ending format.

If you aren’t familiar with that method of finish, basically a target score is set when the first under four-minute timeout is taken at the end of the game. The next team to reach the target score of seven points more than the leading squad ends up the winner.

In this case, Big X had the lead 73-70 when the first media timeout took place inside four minutes. From there it was a furious back and forth finish with the Trenches even getting to just one-point shy of a win at 79-77.

Big X found a way to win anyway by sinking two free-throws to tie it, then getting a stop on defense to set up Jamel Morris’ floater off the backboard for the final bucket and elated win.

The team won despite the roster looking completely different than what was intended when the team first announced its intentions to be in the $2 Million winner-take-all tournament.

Former Ohio State players Kam Williams and Jae’Sean Tate were supposed to take part but were not in uniform. Tate is dealing with a broken finger, and Williams did not suit up for unknown reasons. Former Michigan sharp shooter Duncan Robinson was also committed to take place, but did not due to signing a two-way deal with the Miami Heat.

Big X will now be in action again Sunday in Columbus when it’ll take on the No. 5 seeded Primetime Players at 4PM for a spot in the round of sixteen.
