Buckeye Battle Cry: The Darkhorse Contender In The Big Ten

I’m going to go against everything I believe in and pick the Northwestern Wildcats. If there’s one thing I’ve learned following and writing about the Big Ten through the years, it’s that both Iowa and Northwestern are consistent in that they are always inconsistent.

But I believe that the Wildcats — though they lost some key performers — have a coach who exudes confidence and belief. And while it takes a real man to wear purple and play football, Pat Fitzgerald’s teams find a way to be competitive because of good coaching and a buy-in mentality culture he’s created.

But most importantly there’s quarterback Clayton Thorson. I feel he’s a little under the radar when all the media-types discuss quarterbacks in the Big Ten. He’s coming off an ACL injury he suffered in the Music City Bowl, and if you read between the lines, all indications are he’ll be ready to go very early in the season. Otherwise, why would the coy Pat Fitzgerald think he’s got a shot to be a first round NFL draft pick?

The 6-4, 225lb. senior stands tall in the pocket, has an NFL arm and has completed almost 60% of his passes for an average of almost 3,000 yards per season the last two years.

He’s going to take Chicago’s Big Ten team places I think. The schedule might be too tough to win the division, but the Wildcats will ruin a good team or two’s day in the fall.
