Team Scarlet & Gray Wins, Advances To Quarterfinals Of TBT

It may have come tougher than anyone thought, but Team Scarlet & Gray was able to hold off the No. 12 seeded PrimeTime Players to advance in the world’s greatest summer league basketball tournament known unoriginally as The Basketball Tournament.

Without big man Jared Sullinger who provided 30 points and 20 rebounds in round two, Team S&G seemed to struggle to adjust. Former All-American and overall NBA first pick Greg Oden filled in and scored in double figures, but PrimeTime Players came out hot from beyond the arc and held as much as a six point lead early on in the first half.

But it was a different story in the second half. Team S&G came out in a zone defense and began to lock down on the three-point shooters, force turnovers and begin to bury shots of their own on the other end and stretched a lead all the way out to sixteen before PrimeTime Players made a brief run to cut the lead to five points at 65-60.

After a couple of misses up and down the court by both teams, Ohio State grabbed a rebound under four minutes to go and called a timeout to set up the Elam Ending target score of 72.

It was all Team Scarlet and Gray from there with Aaron Craft taking over. The former OSU point guard scored the first four points of the seven needed to seal the deal on driving layups, then with the score 69-60, David Lighty found William Buford in the corner for the game winning three to send the team into the quaterfinals with a final of 72-60.

Team Scarlet and Gray next takes on No. 2 seed Team Fredette Sunday at 3PM for chance to get back to the semifinals. It’ll be a fun matchup with Aaron Craft getting the assignment of checking one of the top scorers in the entire tournament.

We’ll have a preview of that game later Saturday.
