Ohio State Football Opens Fall Camp Today Amidst A Cloud Of Uncertainty

Most years, today would be a big day in the anticipated timeline of Ohio State football. After all, fall camp officially begins today and there are several questions about positions and roles that need to be answered.

But none of those will be the main question that everyone is waiting for. No, instead, for once, the thawing out of a new football season will take a backseat to a cloud of mystery, uncertainty, and potentially scandal, that will all have to be unraveled and answered.

So here’s where things stand:

  • Urban Meyer is on paid administrative leave while the university conducts an investigation surrounding several text messages, pictures and first hand statements from Courtney Smith, the alleged victim of domestic violence at the hands of former Ohio State assistant Zach Smith. The story was broken by Brett McMurphy earlier this week, and paramount in the investigation is whether Urban Meyer knew or not.
  • Assistant coach Ryan Day has been named the acting head coach while Urban Meyer is on administrative leave.

  • We won’t get any answers real soon as Ohio State announced that media opportunities will be suspended while the investigation gets under way. We should know a status and perhaps new timeline on Monday according to the release.
  • Late Thursday, Ohio State also announced the formation of an independent committee to investigate all that has come to light with the alleged cover up of domestic abuse by Zach Smith and Urban Meyer’s role in it. That’s a good move.

So that’s where we are as we await further details to emerge.

In the meantime, fall camp is off and running today. Everyone is anxious to see how new quarterback Dwayne Haskins looks, who will take over at the other safety spot opposite Jordan Fuller, how the reshuffled offensive line will look, and much, much more.

But all of that will have to wait. And it should wait. Ohio State has more pressing matters than figuring out how things look on the football field, it must take care of the more important things that have gone on with people’s lives outside of it.

Sometimes, football ins’t the most important things on folks mind. Even in places like Columbus, Ohio.
