Ohio State at No. 5 in initial AP Poll

The Associated Press released its initial preseason poll on Monday morning. The Buckeyes begin the season ranked fifth, one spot behind B1G foe Wisconsin.

It’s important to note that this poll is like an episode of Seinfeld in that it’s a show about nothing. While it was once a huge factor in determining the national championship, the AP poll is simply for entertainment purposes. The only set of rankings that matters is the one that Selection Committee uses, and those will not come out until late October.

In other words, don’t put much stock in this poll. Much like the FWAA-NFF Power 16 Poll, this poll just gives us something to talk about until the season starts. In just less than two weeks (not that I’m counting or anything), Ohio State has the chance to get out on the gridiron and prove to the entire nation that this is the most talented Buckeye team in more than two decades.

Considering that OSU won two national championships during that span – and should have played for at least two others – it’s hard not to be excited about the upcoming season.
