Buckeye Battle Cry: Will Distractions Galvanize Or Tear This Ohio State Team Apart?

We keep trying to get away from it, but the Zach Smith domestic abuse allegations keep pulling us back in. We asked our writers this week to weigh in on whether the off-the-field stuff would make the team stronger, or keep it from reaching its full potential.

Who knows when all this Urban Meyer investigation and fallout will die down at this point. One thing is certain though, the kids on the football team know about it and have turned it over in their mind.

We decided to ask our writers if all the off-the-field nonsense would have a negative impact on the season or galvanize a team that has enough talent to do some really big things in 2018.

Well guys, maybe I’m wearing scarlet colored lenses, but I truly believe we’re going to see a team who’s playing for each other as we enter the 2018 season. Regardless of how you feel about the Urban Meyer/Zach Smith saga, this team has every reason to stick together.

Remember when Ohio State made the very first College Football Playoff? All the pundits said they didn’t belong, they snuck in the back door, it’s not going to matter anyway because the Bucks were playing mighty Alabama. There was a moment sometime in the middle of the Sugar Bowl when the cameras flashed to a fan in the stands wearing a simple gray sweatshirt with black lettering “Ohio Against The World”. Truer words had never been spoken, because that’s exactly what it felt like in that moment.

It seemed that no one wanted to see Ohio State win, let alone give them any kind of credit for getting this far. However, it was the adversity of losing a Heisman candidate quarterback in the final game of the regular season and the lonely feeling of nobody believing in you outside of your teammates and fans that brought that team together.

The feeling is similar here. Outside of Columbus, everyone is down on the Buckeyes. When you feel like you’re surrounded on all sides by those who want to take shots, you can either curl up in a fetal position or lock arms and prepare for battle. Only one of those options can lead to glory.

So, yes, I believe this Buckeye team is going to come out being the most focused team we’ve seen since the 2014/2015 National Championship season. OHIO AGAINST THE WORLD!
