If Dwayne Haskins Continues To Play At A High Level, What Does Ohio State Do With Tate Martell?

With the lights out play of Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State could have a quarterback issue on its hands in trying to keep Tate Martell happy.

First the good news. Dwayne Haskins looks to be the real deal. Sure the competition wasn’t the greatest, but it he looked like he had a good grasp on the offense and showed poise, accuracy and decisiveness in slinging the ball around the yard Saturday.

That’s great for the next couple of seasons, but now you have to wonder what’s going through backup quarterback Tate Martell’s head. Unless Haskins digresses significantly in the coming weeks, or — heaven forbid — suffers an injury, Martell is likely the No. 2 for at least the next couple of years.

And as we’ve seen recently, quarterbacks with the talent to start at other places often go the transfer route. You have to be wondering if Martell is beginning to let that creep into his frame of mind.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves here, it’s important to note that having knee-jerk reactions is not the wise choice here. Many things can change. Martell could become a greater part of the offense, Haskins could hit some speed bumps, and there’s of course another off-season of improvement and development yet to go heading into next year.

Maybe Martell closes the gap then.

There’s no denying it though. A whopping 313 yards and five touchdowns later, it sure looks like Haskins is beginning to wrestle complete control of being the face of the Ohio State offense through the next couple of years — at least.
