Best All-Time Season

2006 – I know that some people will make an argument for the 1971 Rutgers team that went undefeated. While Frank Burns’ (insert your M*A*S*H joke here) squad had a great season, it didn’t play in a bowl game that year.

On the other hand, the 2006 squad not only made a bowl game, it finished the year ranked 12th in the nation — the highest in school history. The Scarlet Knights actually cracked the top ten that season after upsetting then-No. 3 Louisville on a Thursday night thriller.

An interesting footnote: the head coach of that team was current Buckeye defensive coordinator Greg Schiano.

Best Player Of All-Time

Deron Cherry, FS/P, 1979 – Although he wasn’t one of the consensus All-Americans referenced above, I went with Deron Cherry. A six-time Pro Bowler, Cherry was the team’s MVP in 1979. Interestingly enough, he also doubled as the team’s punter, averaging 41.3 yards per kick.
