Johnson: Final Thoughts Heading Into Week 3

Each week, we bring you some random thoughts before Ohio State takes to the gridiron. Here are some nuggets about this week’s important non-conference clash with TCU.

  • I know that it’s only week 3, but this is an important contest for Ohio State. After all, a victory would give the Buckeyes a win against a top 15 opponent. That will almost certainly carry weight when selecting the four best teams for the College Football Playoff…
  • … unless the Selection Committee decides that Alabama needs another do-over.
  • Yes, I know you’ve all heard me say that several times before. But, much like running Mike Weber off-tackle, just give it time, and it will produce a score.
  • The key matchup in this game is the Buckeye ground attack against TCU’s front seven (technically eight). As noted in our Enemy Territory piece, Gary Patterson’s defenses are notorious for stopping the run. If Ohio State can establish the run early, it’ll keep the Horned Frogs honest. Otherwise, the TCU pass rush can pin its ears back and come after Haskins.
  • On the other side of the ball, I can’t wait to see the Buckeye pass rush against the Horned Frog offense, which hasn’t allowed a sack all year long. Shawn Robinson is an accurate passer, but is also an excellent runner, averaging 11.2 yards per carry.
  • If the Buckeyes win this game, it’s tough to see Ryan Day not taking over as the head coach after Urban Meyer moves on. Leading the team to a victory over a Gary Patterson-coached defense — in a de facto road game — tells you all that you need to know about his coaching ability.
  • Prediction: This will be a hard-fought battle with both defenses controlling the game early on. In a game as evenly matched as this one, the team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. Look for Haskins to make a play late in the game to get the Buckeyes a “W”. OSU wins a squeaker 21-17.
