Did Dwayne Haskins Elevate His Heisman Status Against TCU?

For Dwayne Haskins to elevate his Heisman status, it was imperative that he showed up and played well against TCU. Consider it a success.

Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins put up video game numbers the first two weeks of the season to elbow his way into the Heisman conversation early on. But that was against the likes of Oregon State and Rutgers — not exactly a who’s who of the college football universe.

So, it was a fringe conversation and one of wait and see. After all, Heisman campaigns aren’t made in the first few weeks of the season, but during prime time affairs against quality opponents when everyone is glued to their television sets.

That’s why Saturday night against TCU was so important for Haskins. It’s not like he could have cemented his place in New York, but there was the real possibility of falling off the radar, and for all intents and purposes losing out on any chance in Heisman stakes with a poor showing.

But that didn’t happen. Far from it.

Instead, despite more pressure and in-your-face blitz packages from an aggressive TCU defense, Haskins stood tall in the pocket more often than not, made some gutsy decisions and put the ball on the money in tight windows.

Heisman worthy?

Yes, so far. There were still some naysayers out there discounting what Dwayne Haskins can do, but with his performance against the Horned Frogs, he only elevated his Heisman status that was already beginning to rise.

The 6-3 220 lb. sophomore from Potomac, Maryland threw for 344 yards on 42 of 38 passes. There were two pinpoint TDs through the air and another added on the ground to seal the deal.

In the process, he made himself a bona fide Heisman candidate. The next test comes in two weeks against Penn State in Happy Valley, where white-out conditions are expected in prime time. And yes, a national television audience will be watching again.

Something tells me he’ll be up to the task. If so, it’ll only elevate his Heisman credentials even more.
