With All That's Gone On, Is Urban Meyer Closer To Retirement Than Before?

Urban Meyer has had one of the toughest couple of months he’s ever had in the coaching profession. He just signed an extension recently, but will he ride off into the sunset sooner than anyone thinks?

I was talking to Captain Obvious the other day and he told me that Urban Meyer has had a rough couple of months. Yes, that’s correct. He also booked me a great hotel.

The Toll Of The Last Couple Of Months

Truth is, it’s no stretch at all to believe these last couple of months have been some of the most trying of his career — maybe life. His character has come into question, he’s been suspended and reprimanded by the university, and he’s been publicly flogged by the media time-and-time again.

Whether it’s from his own doing (we’re not getting into that here), it’s been one heck of a ride, and it might just be me, but I swear his hair is grayer now than what it was at Big Ten Media Days. And I don’t believe it was to fit more with the Scarlet and Gray color scheme in and around the vicinity of the banks of the Olentangy.

Anyway, Meyer has released four statements defending himself since all of this Zach and Courtney Smith news was broken, and besides that, we’ve really not heard from him until this past Monday at the weekly press-conference Ohio State holds for its head football coach.

And that presser, was a laborious one that covered the timeline and events in great detail. In fact, it was fifty-seven minutes of Urban Meyer trying to set the record straight and do whatever he can to try and turn the runaway train of public perception back around.

With all that’s happened, I can’t help but wonder if this is the type of year that could make Meyer re-evaluate his life priorities and start to put an exit plan in place.

Let’s unravel this for just a moment.
