Buckeye Battle Cry: How Will Ohio State's Offense Change With Urban Meyer Back?

It’s another Friday and you know what that means. It’s our weekly Buckeye Battle Cry roundtable where our staff weighs in on hot Buckeye topics. This week, we ask the writers if and how the offense will change now that Urban Meyer is back on the sideline for game days.

Urban Meyer is finally back on the sidelines after serving his three-game suspension for his role in how he handled troubled employee Zach Smith.

In his absence, the offense has simply been more dynamic than almost any other Ohio State offense through the first three games in its storied history. The architect of the offense has been Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson.

So the question that everyone wants to know? How will things change on offense now that Meyer is the one in charge on the sidelines, if at all.

I know everyone keeps saying wait until Urban gets back and all, but based on what he’s said and what we’ve seen thus far, I really don’t think you’re going to see that many changes.

In fact, Meyer praised the coaching staff on Tuesday’s Big Ten Coaches’ Teleconference call and said that he’s looking to be more of a “game manager” than anything when he comes back.

That means you’ll likely see more of the same and that makes sense with the quarterback under center and the skill positions out there. It’ll still be a balanced attack like we’ve seen, with more of a premium put on the passing game than in year’s past.

Where I think you will see a difference is in those fourth and short situations, or at the end of games. Meyer tends to run more aggressive than what we’ve seen under Day. He’s more apt I think to roll the dice on fourth and short, and you probably wouldn’t have seen a kneel down to end the game against TCU Saturday.

But don’t kid yourselves, the buck now stops with Urban Frank Meyer, and that’s the main difference.
