Ohio State vs. Penn State: James Franklin Says All Games Are Treated The Same - We're Not Buying It

What’s the most important game on the schedule? The next game. Technically speaking… yes. But we all know some games mean a little bit more.

Penn State head coach, James Franklin loves to let the media know that all games are treated the same. The next game on the schedule is the most important game.

Being a coach myself, I understand that philosophy. Coaches never want their team to overlook the current opponent for a future opponent. We see it happen several times each season when an underdog takes a more talented team to the brink and sometimes even pulls off the upset. If you don’t take care of business this week, next week isn’t going to matter as quite as much. We get it.

However, we all know some games are bigger than others, plain and simple. Ohio State has a countdown clock in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center with the days, hours, and minutes until The Game with Michigan. Auburn knows when Alabama is coming to town. And the list goes on.

When Coach Franklin tries to tell us that “Every week is the Super Bowl” it’s coach speak for “I need my team to stay focused on the task at hand,” which is fine. Every coach in America works an angle to motivate their kids for “this week’s game.”

But don’t think for a minute that James Franklin, or any other coach in America for that matter, doesn’t have certain games circled on the calendar.

You better believe Franklin knows this week’s battle against the Buckeyes is the biggest on the schedule. Yeah, we know… you have to beat the other teams on your schedule just the same. However, beat No. 4 Ohio State on a national stage and the Nittany Lions have a statement win for their College Football Playoff resume. Something wins over Rutgers or Appalachian State won’t offer.

So, sorry Coach Franklin, we’re not buying it. You can tell us how this game is no more important than any other, but we all know otherwise. Ohio State has had it circled on its calendar as well.
