Buckeye Battle Cry: Does Ohio State Have Another Rival Behind Michigan?

It’s another Friday and you know what that means. It’s our weekly Buckeye Battle Cry roundtable where our staff weighs in on hot Buckeye topics. This week, we’ve heard about the hatred of Ohio State from the Penn State camp. But do the Buckeyes have a second rival behind Michigan?

If you’ve been listening to the noise emanating from Happy Valley this week, you’ve heard words like hate, rivalry, and ultimate respect thrown around like parting gifts at an Oprah taping.

Here in Columbus though, it’s been billed as a big game and a great challenge, but rarely will you hear anyone mention the Penn State program in the same breath as that one up North.

So it got us thinking. Clearly Michigan will always been the main rivalry now and through the apocalypse, but does Ohio State have a second rival it can get all lathered up about? If so, what team is it?

We’ll let our publisher kick things off first …

First and foremost, no team will ever fully take the place of the one wearing Maize and Blue and currently drowning in its own two-decade misery (I take shots because I can right now), so let’s get that out of the way. There’s too much history, passion and misery associated with The Game. You can’t speak of Ohio State without Michigan, and you can’t point to the Wolverine program without also including the Buckeye one.

But there are teams that rise up and become a bit of a rivalry for periods of time, and I think you could go a couple of ways with this one. Michigan State has certainly been a thorn in the side, and beaten Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes more than any other. Wisconsin has been the team in the West that often gives Ohio State fits because of its physical nature, and then there’s Penn State and all the “We Are” white out noise.

So yeah, there’s another team that seems to always be that team that poses the most resistance to an Ohio State goal of winning the division, Big Ten title and national championship, and it seems to be Penn State right now. But rivalry, I dunno. I don’t think it’s to that level for Ohio State fans right now — especially with the Buckeyes dominating it for the most part since the program joined the Big Ten.

There’s not really a second rival that comes anywhere close to Khaki nation, but there are teams that are respected and that might mean more in the grand scheme of things right now, and that’s about how I sum it all up. Now, that could change if the Nits continue to take some magic away in Columbus, so check back with me in a few years.
