Johnson: Ohio State vs. Minnesota Final Thoughts Heading Into The Game

Each week, we bring you some random thoughts before Ohio State takes to the gridiron. Here are some nuggets about this week’s contest with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

  • I know that I’ve said this a few times, but I’ll say it again: style points matter. Ohio State needs to win this game convincingly. While the Gophers aren’t a horrible team, they simply haven’t gotten the job done in B1G play. The Selection Committee will penalize the Buckeyes if they don’t win big. Whether or not they should is another story…
  • I can’t wait to see what Ohio State’s running game will do against the Gopher front seven. Aside from a horrible showing versus Maryland, Minnesota’s front seven has done a great job of stopping the run. Last week, it held Iowa to 106 yards and 2.65 yards per carry.
  • On the other hand, Urban Meyer said that the running game and pass defense needed to get better. Usually when Meyer says something needs to get fixed, it gets fixed immediately.
  • The key for the Ohio State defense is to keep the heat on Gopher QB Zack Annexstad. In Minnesota’s first three games — all victories — the team did not throw a single interception. Big Ten play is a different story. In two decisive losses, the Gophers threw five interceptions, including three in last week’s loss to Iowa. Will the Ohio State secondary — which hasn’t picked off a pass in the last three games — come up with a few this weekend?
  • See two bullet points above about what happens when Urban Meyer says that something needs to improve.
  • Of course, the secondary might not get the opportunity to showcase what it can do because of the defensive line. Even without Nick Bosa in the lineup, OSU still ranks ninth nationally in tackles for a loss and second in sacks. It’s hard to complete a pass if you’re lying in the grass.
  • Prediction: The Buckeyes will make a statement in this game. The running game will be noticeably better and the defense will stuff the Gopher read option. The secondary will have its best outing of the year, recording at least two picks, while stopping Minnesota’s receivers for short gains on RPO’s. Buckeyes roll to an easy victory. Ohio State 45, Minnesota 7.
