3 Reasons Why Ohio State Fans Should Want To Play Alabama In The College Football Playoff

Remember the days when the Big Ten was knocked for not being able to compete with the ultra-hyped SEC? After Ohio State beat Alabama in the inaugural College Football Playoff, much of that changed. Now Ohio State is a serious contender every year right along with ‘Bama. Is it too early to get excited about the potential of another matchup?

Saban vs Meyer

Every year there are talks about who is the best coach in the college football, and every year it comes down to Meyer and Saban, with an overwhelming majority voicing their opinion that Saban is the best. With the incredible amount of success he’s seen the past couple years, it is certainly hard to deny, but one of the stats that’s overlooked is the head-to-head matchup.

Saban and Meyer in head-to-head clashes are 2-2, so there is no clear statistical advantage. But if Ohio State were to play Alabama this year, it would lend the opportunity for one to stand out — at least modestly.

As an Ohio State fan, it’s natural to want to argue that Meyer is better, but to nothing would be sweeter than seeing OSU beat ‘Bama as a pinnacle of success to Buckeye Nation.

Big Ten vs SEC

While there have been many debates among fans about which conference is the best from top to bottom, it would be an additional feather in the cap if Ohio State beat Alabama again.

The debate normally comes down the SEC and the Big Ten, considering the depth each conference has. Nothing quite settles a debate when there are wins to back up arguments. In the not too distant past, the Big Ten has been criticized for somewhat weak scheduling and its inability to arise to the occasion when the spotlight is on the conference.

What better way to change that perception than a win over the big, bad king of the SEC once again.

A Potential Rivalry

If Ohio State was to play and beat Alabama in the College Football Playoff, it could potentially spark more of a rivalry between two. It would be two consecutive losses to Ohio State for Alabama, and it would mean Meyer would have a winning record vs Saban.

In the media, the narrative would be that Ohio State might be Alabama’s Achilles heel, and some may doubt the dominance of Alabama to another blue-blood of the sport, and we might just hear some murmurs that Urban Myer may be the best coach in college. Not the grumpy Saban.

If there’s one thing that Saban hates, it’s losing, and to drop one again on the big stage would certainly spark emotion. It might even go the point that Ohio State and Alabama would schedule each other in the future. Every fan would love that matchup.

At the end of the day, a high profile game between Ohio State and Alabama is good for the sport. It would mean two top teams, two storied programs, and two highly competitive and historically respected coaches. What more could college football fans ask for?
