Best All-Time Season

1966 – This was a difficult choice. On one hand, the 1979 squad deserves consideration because it posted the only 10-win season in school history. However, that team didn’t play in the Rose Bowl, though it did throttle Tennessee in the Bluebonnet Bowl.

That’s why I selected the 1966 edition. Yes, it lost decisively to No. 8 Notre Dame and No. 2 Michigan State, but the Boilermakers still made it to the Rose Bowl that season. Eventual Hall of Fame QB Bob Griese led an explosive offense that 23.7 points per game and almost 200 yards per game through the air. After allowing just six points in the month of November, Purdue went out to Pasadena and defeated the Trojans 14-13 in their own backyard.

It’s hard to argue with those results.

Best Player Of All-Time

Drew Brees , QB, 1998 –  While Brees had three very solid seasons in West Lafayette, he posted his best numbers during the 1998 campaign. That year, he threw for 3,983 yards and an amazing 39 touchdowns. His precision passing was extremely effective at the end of the year, as the Boilermakers scored 35 points or more in five of their final six contests.

Not surprisingly, Brees also flourished at the professional level. Last week, he became the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards.
