Buckeye Battle Cry: True or Not True? Finebaum Says Meyer Is Done At The End Of This year

Everyone’s favorite SEC homer Paul Finebaum has gone on record to state that he believes this year will be Urban Meyer’s last. Our writers weigh in on this week’s Buckeye Battle Cry roundtable.

Paul Finebaum is one of the most opinionated sports media types out there — and his slants are of course SEC slanted. He often gives credit where credit is due, but far more often, he’ll admit he wrote the book on SEC fandom.

The mouth of the south recently went on record to predict that this year would be Urban Meyer’s last as head coach of Ohio State, citing health concerns and the latest media blitz surrounding the Zach Smith fiasco.

What do our writers think about this prediction? Is there some truth to it, or is it just Finebaum being Finebaum?

Any of us who have ever put a whistle around our neck with the intent to lead a team knows how stressful of a job coaching can be. Whether the job is to coach 10 year olds and try to keep parents happy or 20 year olds and keep fan bases, booster, and administrators in a good mood, the job is not for the weary of heart.

With that said, most coaches I know are ultra competitive and Urban Meyer is no different. Yes, Meyer left Florida in the middle of some fantastic years due to health reasons. Urban takes a lot of crap for leaving Florida, but the truth is, anyone who has had a health scare knows it can cause a person to reevaluate. And unless you’ve been through a health scare, you have no room to talk down to someone who has.

I say Finebaum is just being Finebaum, doing what the national media heads like to do… stir up fodder. The more ol’ Paul can say to get people to love him on one side and hate him on the other, means more money in his pocket.

At this point, I don’t see Urban going anywhere.  He’s in the middle of a contract and I believe he legitimately loves investing in the lives of the young men he coaches. I say he’s around for years to come.
