After seeing this past week the incredible story of Tyler Trent, it really gives one the perspective of just how much sports can impact lives for the better.

It is amazing how one fan’s dreams coming true, can give him the inspiration to live and fight another day, and in turn, Tyler has inspired so many football fans.

One name many fans might not know is Boomer Hornbeck. Boomer was diagnosed as a child with cerebral palsy, he was told he would never walk or be able to do anything for himself. Boomer has had over 23 surgeries through his early life, and was at one point in a full body cast, and went through every struggle imaginable both mentally and physically. After his toughest surgery, Urban Meyer personally flew to Florida to see him, to offer support in any way that he could.

Going through months in a hospital would have taken a toll on most, and would have made most to give up on life, but not Boomer. One day that changed, from the inspiration of Urban Meyer, Boomer took his first steps from his wheelchair toward Urban Meyer.

From the perspective that he was told that he would never walk, it was truly a dream come true for him. Boomer has the heart of a warrior, he saw cerebral palsy as a stepping stone towards success, rather than a roadblock in life.

In a personal interview with Boomer, he spoke with high regards to the Meyers. He said, “ The entire (Meyer) family truly impacts my life more than I can explain.”

Through the dedication and personal work ethic Boomer now works out daily as his health has progressed. He has shown many how far determination and heart can take you as you travel through life.

Boomer has used his personal story as a platform to inspire others. He is also extremely eloquent and has used that gift to speak anywhere from sports teams, to businesses, to the Tim Tebow Foundation. As part of his future plans, he desires to attend Florida Gulf Coast University to study Sports Management with aspirations to become a sports agent one day.

Personally hearing amazing stories such as Boomer makes me realize what life is really about. Sports can, and is used to impact lives for the better. So many people’s lives have been encouraged by the sports world, and in turn, amazing stories such as Boomer’s has inspired not just communities but people across the country.

The Meyers have impacted so many lives. Whether its athletes on the field, to law enforcement officers in the community, to kids suffering illnesses, to giving time and money to the community, but much of it goes unnoticed.

As fans, we will never truly know and understand all that they have done and will do for the community. We should all be very thankful for what coaches and their families such as the Meyers do, and who they are at their core being.

One way Buckeye nation can give back Meyers for all they have done is to donate to the Urban and Shelly Meyer Fund for cancer research. Through their efforts, they have partnered with The James Cancer hospital at Ohio State to help with the fight and research of the dreaded disease.

Together as communities across the nation we can appreciate and give back to the people who have impacted our lives for the better. To some, sports is entertainment, but to others, sport is what motivates them to live another day.
