Ohio State Football And Its Big Relationship With Little Newark Catholic

Ohio State has many pipelines across this country of ours, but there’s a rather significant relationship with a little school in the next county over. The school goes by the name of Newark Catholic.

If you go to the small, rural town of Newark, Ohio, you will discover one thing upon arriving. There is not much to do in Newark. You have 21st street, which is simply filled with restaurant chains, and then you have surrounding Heath which contains a movie theater and a bowling alley.

The city contains two high schools. Newark High School, a large Division 1 public school over with over a thousand students, and also tucked away on Green Wave Drive in Newark is a school called Newark Catholic. Newark Catholic only has around 250 students, but is known as a traditional powerhouse in sports, and is considered to be an old friend to the Ohio State University Football program.

So what makes this small high school tucked away in rural Newark, Ohio, so special? And what is the special bond between it in Ohio State? Well for starters, this small school has produced two All-American football players at the Ohio State University, Jeff Ulenhake and Rob Kelley.

Ulenhake went on to have a long successful career in the NFL, while Kelley also had a short stint in the NFL. Former Newark Catholic coach J.D. Graham also had a coaching stint with the Ohio State Buckeyes, while Ulenhake remains on staff at OSU as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Ohio State.

Newark Catholic embodies the old hard work and gritty mindset that this country was built on. In a country where high school football has transitioned seemingly into only big schools being the recruiting powerhouses, Newark Catholic serves as a reminder to Ohio State and other recruiters throughout the country that success can be built upon in any situation with a hard work and a positive mindset.
