Ohio State traveling to Cincinnati was a game 97 years in the making, and after tonight, the Bearcats might want to think about waiting another century to arrange another marriage in purgatory.

That’s because an Ohio State team that is expected to struggle finding itself this year came into Fifth-Third Arena and stole one away. Here’s three things we learned after watching the Buckeyes in game one of the 2018-19 season.

This Matchup Needs To Happen More Often

And by more often, we mean annually. It’s arguably the two biggest and most well-known programs in the state (no offense Dayton and Xavier) and they’re only separated by about 100 miles. The two teams do share some history, but for the most part because of some bad blood and shortsightedness, the two have been writing history in parallel with each other rather than with each other.

This game was a lot of fun tonight and there’s serious potential for it to become something the entire region can get into. I say add Xavier and Dayton to the mix and do a four-team tournament every year.

By the way, Chris Holtmann was very instrumental in making this happen, and it’s another reason he’s the right guy for the job in Columbus. He embraces situations and doesn’t shy away from challenges and things that have been taboo in the past.
