Best All-Time Season

1952 – In a really tough decision, I picked the 1952 team.

Let’s be honest: it’s hard to win a national championship. It’s even harder to win back-to-back titles after a perfect season.

Yet, the Spartans made it look easy. Sure, Michigan State played a couple of close games that season. But Sparty led the nation in scoring offense and finished third in scoring defense, winning by an average of 25 points per game. MSU also posted wins over three ranked opponents that season, including a 21-3 victory over No. 4 Notre Dame late in the year.

Best Player Of All-Time

Le’Veon Bell, RB, 2012 –  With apologies to Lorenzo White — who rushed for 2,066 yards in 1985 — I selected Le’Veon Bell.

So why did Bell get the nod? Simple: opposing defenses knew that he was going to get the ball, but still couldn’t stop him. The focal point of the Spartan offense, Bell ran for 1,793 yards on 382 carries and caught 32 passes for 167 yards. He also came up with a huge play in the Buffalo Wild Wings’ Bowl, completing a 29-yard pass out of the Wildcat formation to get the Spartans on the scoreboard, which culminated in a victory over TCU.
