Growing up in Ohio, it is almost every high school football player’s dream to play for The Ohio State University. That was Michigan State safety Dominique Long’s dream growing up as well.

Long grew up in Westerville, Ohio, about 15 minutes from Columbus. Long starred in football and track at Westerville South High School for four years, and graduated in 2017. He described his time to me at South as, “living in a great community and making great friendships.”

Long says that his biggest takeaway from his four years at Westerville South is, “You have to be tough. No matter the situation, you just always have to be tough no matter what you are going through.”

Long had a dream growing up, and it was to play football for Ohio State — the hometown team in a football crazed state. According to Long, “Ohio State never recruited me during the recruiting process in high school.” While to many it might have been discouraging to not be recruited by your dream school, Long continued to put in hard work and continued to be the kind, well-liked person in the community he had always been.

Long did eventually get an offer to play Division 1 College Football, but it was not for the Scarlet and Grey. He was offered a full ride scholarship to play football at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Long has found his happy place at Michigan State as he describes MSU as, “a lot of great people who have helped him grow in his football knowledge, and have helped him further his academics.

This past Saturday, Long took on Ohio State for the second time in his two years as a Spartan. Long described his experience to me as “Unreal. You always bring intensity to every game of course, but playing against Ohio State, my favorite team growing up, the intensity is unmatched. It is very special.”

Long and his journey to college football teach a valuable life lesson to all. Sometimes in our lives, our dreams and our goals may change. We cannot plan everything as we want, but, if we work hard and have a tough resiliency to achieve our dreams in our lives, we will be successful and make it to where we want to be.

Long is living his dream playing college football, as he has been a special teams star for the Spartans this year on kickoffs and punts.

Dominique Long is the embodiment of resiliency, and this is a story we can all love, appreciate, and root for.
