Best All-Time Season

1951 – Although the 1953 squad won the AP National Championship (based on the final poll before the bowl games), it’s worth pointing out that it lost the Orange Bowl 7-0 to Oklahoma. Considering that the Terps were shutout to end the season, I didn’t feel comfortable calling it the greatest team in Maryland history.

That honor goes to the 1951 team. Led by head coach Jim Tatum, the Maryland Split-T attack lead the nation in scoring averaging 38.1 points per game. The defense was equally solid, ranking third in the country in scoring defense while holding seven of its ten opponents to a touchdown or less.

Although it only finished third in the final polls, it did throttle No. 1 Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl 28-14.

Best Player Of All-Time

LaMont Jordan, RB, 1999 –  As the tweet above shows, Jordan is Maryland’s all-time leading rusher. His best season with the Terps was in 1999, when he ran for 1,632 yards (6.1 ypc) and 16 touchdowns, while catching 19 passes for 208 yards. As a result of these stellar numbers he earned first-team All-ACC honors and was a second-team All-American.
