Can Ohio State Finally Put It All Together For The Michigan Game?

Despite all the talent in the world, Ohio State just can’t seem to put everything together for a full sixty minutes. It’ll need it against Michigan Saturday.

Something just hasn’t clicked this year for Ohio State.

There’s been games when the offense has been unstoppable. There’s been games when the defense (though rare) has been stout the entire game. There’s even been times when the special teams have been truly special.

But we’ve yet to see a game when all units are playing to their potential for all four quarters. Sure it may have looked like it against Rutgers and Tulane, but then we remember that it’s Rutgers and … Tulane.

No, against the likes of TCU, Penn State and Michigan State, something has just been a little off. Sometimes more than just a little off.

There’s no questioning the talent on the roster. The Buckeyes might have more skill than anyone in the country across the board, and it’s not just the starters, but the kids sitting on the bench looking to be developed as well.

Just look at the recruiting rankings and players going to the NFL. There’s Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson, then everyone else (sorry Michigan). And the same talent remains.

So what has happened this year? Yeah, woe is me. The Buckeyes are still 10-1 and have everything on the line, but there are more warts that have bubbled up this year than what we’ve seen in the past.

The defense continues to give up big plays, the running game is inconsistent, and the red zone offense has been an adventure — to be kind.

But it’s mind-boggling. Ohio State has one of the best coaching staffs in all of college football, and you’d think the marriage between the minds and talent would result in a sweet symphony of football bliss.

Instead, it’s often been a hot mess of a narrow escape against the likes of Minnesota, Nebraska and Maryland. Boy 10-1 never looked like such a Lord of the Rings Journey than what we’ve seen this year.

If there’s any good news though, there’s still time to play that game in which everyone hits on their potential. That’s because this week is The Game. And if things finally click against Michigan, and the Buckeyes ruin the day of Jim Harbaugh and company yet again, then all will be forgiven.

And if not? Well, it might be a long day.
