Ohio State Needs To Take Care Of Business Against Northwestern, And Nothing Else

Terry Johnson explains why the only thing that Ohio State fans need to be concerned with is the Northwestern Wildcats

Here’s some friendly advice Buckeye fans: don’t worry about the College Football Playoff rankings this week. The only thing that matters is beating Northwestern. Defeat the Wildcats and everything else will fall into place.

Please don’t get me wrong: I know that the topic will come up this week. SEC fans will tell you that their conference deserves two (or three) spots in the field. Likewise, Oklahoma fans will talk about how explosive their offense is, making them the best choice to take on the likes of Clemson and Alabama.

Don’t waste your breath arguing about it. Provided that Ohio State takes care of business against Northwestern things will sort themselves out.

Look at what happened in 2013. After Auburn miraculously beat Alabama on the “Kick Six”, Tiger fans complained all week long that they – not Ohio State – should play Florida State for the national championship. All of that bellyaching became moot by the following Saturday as Michigan State mounted a fourth quarter comeback to knock the Buckeyes out of the title game.

A more analogous situation happened in 2014. Ohio State entered the Big Ten championship game in fifth place in the CFP rankings. Behind “third string” quarterback Cardale Jones, the Buckeyes throttled Wisconsin 59-0, leaving no doubt that they belonged in the field. In fact, the victory was so impressive that No. 3 TCU – which defeated Iowa State 55 – 3 in the final week of the season – dropped all the way to No. 6.

That, my friends, is why OSU needs to worry about beating Northwestern and letting the chips fall where they may. If the Buckeyes win big, they’re in, regardless of what happens in any of the other contests. However, considering that we haven’t seen very many upsets during championship week since the inception of the College Football Playoff, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a few this weekend.

In other words: let’s throttle the Wildcats this weekend and then worry about our CFP ranking.
