If you’ve been listening to the national media, it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Oklahoma will get in over Ohio State for the No. 4 spot of the College Football Playoff — and without much of a debate.

But all you have to do is go back to last year to see that just because the wind seems to blowing one way, doesn’t mean that it is. Most everyone thought Ohio State would get in over Alabama last year, but when it was all said and done, the SEC team got the benefit of the doubt.

Now this year.

According to fivethirtyeight, Ohio State has the fourth best chance to make the playoffs at 66%. That’s behind Alabama and Clemson at >99%, and Oklahoma at 72%. Interestingly enough, the fifth team in that equation that Ohio State is listed with better odds than is an undefeated Notre Dame team at just 61% odds.

Then there’s ESPN Playoff Predictor. It again has Ohio State with the fourth best chance to get in. Ahead of the Buckeyes are Alabama and Clemson at >99%, Notre Dame at 98%, then Ohio State at 71%. The odd team out according to ESPN is Oklahoma with just a 26% chance.

This should give Ohio State fans some hope, but just to reset those expectations — fivethirtyeight had Ohio State in last year and Alabama out. So there you go.

Folks, it really feels like Ohio State will be relegated to the Rose Bowl with the four teams in the playoff as Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma.

But we can still hope and dream right?
