Ohio State Seizes The "Day" With Its New Coaching Hire

In case you missed it, here’s the Urban Meyer tribute video @OhioStateFB put out.

Ryan Day was named the 25th football coach in Ohio State history yesterday by Gene Smith at the same time that Urban Meyer announced his retirement.

Urban Meyer is arguably the second greatest college football coach of all time, respectively behind Nick Saban. His retirement is quite the loss, but Day is the right man for the job.

Day has coached in the NFL and is a former disciple of offensive-minded genius Chip Kelly. He took the Ohio State offense to new heights this year and elevated quarterback Dwayne Haskins to a whole new level. The Ohio State quarterback even received an invite to the Heisman trophy ceremony as a finalist.

Day took the reign as the head coach during Meyer’s suspension this year, and went 3-0. He is well respected by the current players, and — maybe more importantly — with current recruits, as most of Ohio State’s commits have stuck with the Buckeyes after Meyer’s recent retirement.

There’s no way around it. Meyer’s presence will be deeply missed, but Rya Day has all the tools and pedigree to keep Ohio State at an elite level. With Dwayne Haskins most likely declaring for the NFL Draft after the Rose Bowl, Tate Martell and Day look to be a deadly duo next season.

Look for a big offensive show in Pasadena in the granddaddy of them all, as Meyer rides into the sunset while a new coaching legacy begins.

Sieze the Day, Ryan.
