Ohio State Rose Bowl Tickets Are Buckeyes' Second Most Expensive Since 2011

Ohio State may not have made the College Football Playoff, but the price of tickets for its appearance in the Rose Bowl says there’s still plenty of interest in the Buckeyes’ post-season destination.

Ohio State was probably hoping for a College Football Playoff invite after knocking off Michigan in the Big Ten championship game. But the No. 6 Buckeyes will have to settle for the next best thing — a visit to the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes last trip to California and a chance to play in the oldest of all the bowl games was in 2010, when they beat Oregon.

And it appears the Rose Bowl is happy to have them — demand for the game is sky high, according to secondary ticket marketplace TicketIQ.com. The $703 average asking price for the Rose Bowl is highest among all bowl games, including the two national semifinals. In fact, that price is the second highest for a Rose Bowl since 2011, when TicketIQ.com began tracking data. The highest priced Rose Bowl cost fans $743 in 2017, when Penn State played hometown favorite USC.

The cheapest Rose Bowl of the decade was in 2013, when fans paid $228 to see Stanford play Wisconsin.

Traditionally played on New Year’s Day, this year’s edition of the Rose Bowl will kick off at 5 p.m. ET, making it the second-to-last game of the day. It will be sandwiched between the Fiesta and Citrus bowls (both of which kick off at 1 p.m.) and the Sugar Bowl (8:45 p.m.).

This edition of the Rose Bowl is the second most expensive Ohio State bowl game since 2011, when TicketIQ.com began tracking data. In 2015, fans paid $858 to see Ohio State beat Oregon in the CFP national championship. That game was played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The cheapest OSU bowl game this decade cost fans $118 on the secondary market in 2012, when the Buckeyes played Florida at the Gator Bowl.

This year’s game won’t have a hometown component, though fans for No. 9 Washington, winners of the Pac-12, are likely to travel, and Ohio State travels well. Fans will have a chance to see a matchup not often seen — Ohio State and Washington have played only 11 times dating to 1957. The most recent game was in 2007, when Ohio State beat Washington, 33-14. In fact, the Buckeyes are on a three-game winning streak against the Huskies, and have an 8-3 all-time series advantage.

The Rose Bowl, which extends invitations to the winners of the Big Ten and Pac-12 annually, is the only bowl game outside of the CFP to feature two Top 10 teams.

The game, and its famous parade, are the oldest in the world of bowl games. The Rose Bowl game dates to 1902, though it wasn’t played annually until 1916. Known as “The Granddaddy of Them All,” the Rose Bowl has one of the highest payouts of all bowl games. The number was $35 million as of 2016. The Rose Parade, a New Year’s morning tradition in Pasadena and around the U.S., predates the football game. The parade was introduced in 1890 and, in fact, the football game was only added in 1902 as a way to help finance the parade.
