Everyone knows Woody Hayes. The tough, resilient, army like coach who was a winner. Everyone hears the stories of Woody and what he did to motivate players. However, what many people fail to realize is that Woody Hayes was a great person as well.

According to Rex Kern, Hayes was once shopping at a mall in Upper Arlington, Ohio. A man shopping approached Hayes and told him how much he and his wife respected and loved Hayes and The Ohio State University.
Hayes then asked the man where his wife was.

The man told Woody that his wife was dying of cancer at Riverside Hospital on the west side of Columbus. When the man went to visit his wife later that night, Hayes was already by his wife’s bedside, talking to her, attempting to lift her spirits.

This story shows that Hayes was more than just a legendary football coach. He had a huge heart and loved and cared about others. If you ask his players, they would all tell you how much love he shared with them and the community, and what an amazing person he was.
