Tate Martell "100% Confident" He'll Be Starting QB For Ohio State Next Year, Not Justin Fields

There’s been a lot of speculation about Georgia backup QB Justin Fields transferring to Ohio State. The current OSU QB in waiting, Tate Martell, won’t roll over so easily.

If you believe all the rumors and speculation, it appears at least likely that Georgia backup quarterback and former five-star recruit Justin Fields could be headed to Columbus.

If that’s the case, and if Dwayne Haskins does what everyone expects and announces his intentions to head to the NFL, then we might be looking at the next Scarlet and Gray Days of our Lives when it comes to a quarterback controversy in 2019.

It’s sure to be a hotly contested race to take the keys of the offense if both former five-star quarterbacks are on the roster and ready to compete through spring and fall. Fields was the top QB recruit to come out in the 2018 class, and Martell was considered the same in a lot of recruiting services for the 2017 class.

Martell has been somewhat quiet with all the rumors swirling (aside from a cryptic tweet about swinging and missing twice last week), but met the subject head on this week.

He flat out guaranteed that he’ll start if Haskins heads to the NFL, even if Fields transfers to Columbus.

There’s been so much written already about the chances of Martell transferring if Fields does indeed back the U-Haul up to the Oval. But it sure sounds like the former National Gatorade Player of the Year in high school isn’t going to back down from a challenge, nor will he be looking to transfer.

I’ll say this. You have to love the competitiveness of Martell. He’s already lost one QB battle to Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins last year. He didn’t leave then, and it doesn’t appear he’s looking to be airlifted out of all the cross-fire here either.

And don’t count him out either. People forget just how talented and dynamic he is because of the shiny object Justin Fields. Add that to the competitive fire that shines through with these types of comments and you might be looking at the next great one in Columbus.
