Ohio State hires former Maryland assistant Matt Barnes as special teams coach

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Ryan Day have hired Matt Barnes as special teams coordinator and assistant secondary coach.  Barnes previously worked as an assistant with the Maryland Terrapins prior to taking the job in Columbus.

Per UMTerps, he worked with the linebackers for three seasons and took over special teams responsibilities this season during his tenure in College Park.

Here is what head football coach Ryan Day had to say on the hire in a press release from Ohio State.

“Matt is young coach who has really done a great job at Maryland,” Day said. “He’s an energy guy who has considerable knowledge of the Big Ten Conference plus experience coaching in the Southeastern Conference. He’s going to work well with our staff and I’m pleased to have him on board.”

Before working at Maryland, Barnes worked as a defensive analyst at Michigan in 2015.  He began his career at Delaware Valley College, before making stops at West Virginia Wesleyan and Florida.

Interestingly enough, Maryland special teams ranked No. 3 in the Big Ten, and 18th in the nation on kickoff returns last season, with an average of 23.9 yards.
